A person who uses the ideas or the work (or/and part of the work of) another person without making any reference to the author using the relevant academic reference guidelines), commits the offence of plagiarism.

During the writing of an essay / report, research / other academic work, trainees at the Cyprus Police Academy have to comply with academic research ethics. The trainees need to have in mind that according to the Law on Intellectual Property (L59/76), copying, reproducing or publishing part or the whole of the content of various written texts or books, without making the relevant reference to the author is forbidden. The Police (Disciplinary) Regulations (R.A.A. 53/1989) also apply.

The source must be acknowledged and recorded especially when:
    Ø words, phrases or sentences (or their translation) are reproduced
    Ø words, phrases or sentences are paraphrased or translated
    Ø Texts (copy and paste) are downloaded directly from the web
    Ø Statistical records, tables, photographs, diagrams etc of another person / agency etc are used.

In addition, it is forbidden to:
    Ø Copy the work of another trainee
    Ø Assign (with or without pay) the writing of an assignment to someone else and present it as his/her own
    Ø Give a project of one trainee to another person to present as his/her own

The plagiarism policy applies in the cases of reports, research papers, essays or other academic work (besides the written or/and oral or/and practical exams carried out within the framework of training programs at the CPA for evaluation purposes.

To detect cases of plagiarism the Police Academy uses an electronic tool for text comparison. In the case that a report / essay, research paper / other academic work of a participant in a training program at the CPA is found to be the result of plagiarism (either in full or in part) or is not the his/her own work, then this will not be accepted for the purposes of student evaluation and fulfilment of course requirements. Additionally, other disciplinary or other measures against the participant cannot be excluded. (Additionally, disciplinary or other measures may be taken against the student/participant involved).
