The experts of the Fingerprint Identification Laboratory are responsible with performing the operation of the Automated Fingerprint System (A.F.I.S). This is a Biometric Identification System that among other capabilities can compare, identify and effectively maintain a fingerprint database (tenprints and latent prints).

F.I.L. is the administrator of the above mentioned database of fingerprints as well as palm prints and moreover is responsible for dealing with all the issues concerning fingerprints used for Law Enforcement purpose locally and with other partners such the European Union.

The given list below outlines some of the tasks of the F.I.L:

  • Comparison/Identification of latent fingerprints evidence from crime scenes. The search is done manually for known suspects or residents and with the assistance of the AFIS system for potential unknown suspects.
  • Comparison/Identification of suspects tenprints vs AFIS database
  • Both of the above mentioned searches are also performed through the PRUM database provided that there is no hit through the local database. Council Decision 2008/615/JHA of 23 June 2008 on the stepping up of cross-border cooperation, particularly in combating terrorism and cross-border crime.
  • Comparison/Identification of tenprints received from Interpol/Europol and moreover the overall processing of the corresponding mail.
  • Maintaining the EURODAC system complying with Council Regulation (EC) No 2725/2000 of 11 December 2000 concerning the establishment of Eurodac for the comparison of fingerprints for the effective application of the Dublin Convention (Eurodac Regulation) relating the status of refugees.
  • Reception and recording fingerprint evidence forwarded to the F.I.L. by Police Investigators.
  • Fingerprinting of imprisoned criminals.
  • Fingerprinting of Cypriots, Europeans and Third Country national provided that the person concerned deposits the necessary identification documents such as passport/i.d. and other comprehensive documents regarding the reason that the person concerned applies for fingerprinting. The cost for fingerprinting is twenty (20) euro and has to be paid in cash.
  • Identification of the identity of corpse with the use fingerprints.
  • Comparison/Identification of footprints.
