Requests of Mutual Legal Assistance

The Police Cooperation Bureau acts as a liaison between the Police and Ministry of Justice & Public Order, with regard to the execution of Official Letters of Request (Rogatory Letters)/European Investigation Orders, from the Authorities of the Republic of Cyprus to other countries assuming a coordinating role in their execution. (Relative is the International Police Cooperation Law 23 (I) 2001, the European Convention on Mutual Assistance in Criminal Matters (Ratification Law 2(III) / 2000, as well as the European Investigation Order in Criminal Matters N.181 (I) 2017).

The Bureau is responsible for receiving and examining requests for judicial assistance sent by the Cyprus Police to other countries. These requests are then forwarded to the Ministry of Justice and Public Order as the Competent Authority for sending requests for judicial assistance to other countries.

At the same time, when there is a need for Police investigators to travel to a foreign country to conduct investigations, the Bureau acts as a liaison between the Ministry of Justice and Public Order and the investigators by handling all necessary arrangements.

Requests from Police Attachés

The Bureau receives all the requests sent the by Police Attachés of foreign countries / Embassies / Consulates in Cyprus, on cases under investigation that are of concern to their countries. The requests is sent to be investigated by the relevant Police Department and its progress is monitored. The Cyprus Police sends through the Police Co-operation Bureau requests to the Liaison Officers to provide information on cases under investigation.

European Union Police Missions

The European missions have been created by the European Union to assist, in the setting up of a local police agency in line with European standards, in countries with post-conflict situations and increased policing needs, particularly in combating organized crime which these countries are faced with. The Police Cooperation Bureau coordinates all matters relating to the participation of Cyprus Police officers in the European Police Missions (i.e. EUBAM Moldova – Ukraine, EUMM Georgia, EULEX Kosovo) within the framework of international police cooperation agreements and is in constant communication by providing any assistance to them.

The Bureau is also responsible for the evaluation, selection and secondment of members of the Police as a Police Liaison Officers in Cyprus foreign diplomatic missions, international organizations and Embassies abroad (e.g. Embassy of Cyprus in Athens, INTERPOL, EUROPOL, FRONTEX, etc) and provides information for the proper performance of their duties.
