The Research and Development Department at Police Headquarters was established in 1988, under the direct command of the Deputy Chief of Police. Its duties included carrying out research related to the organization, function and the development of Cyprus Police as well as the submission of relevant suggestions and plans to the Chief of Police.

In 1990 the Information Technology Branch was set up as part of the Department while in 2003 the Department came under the supervision of the Assistant Chief of Police in charge of Administration. In 2008 the structure of the Department changed further when the Data Entry Office ceased to be a part of the Department. Additional structural changes occurred in 2012 when the Statistics Office became a part of Department A and the Information Technology Branch was divided into two sections – the Network and Technical support Section and the Applications and Data Base Section.

Currently the Research and Development Department is responsible for promoting and implementing procedures and methods which contribute towards further improvement in terms of the efficiency and effectiveness of Cyprus Police.
