Office of Combating Trafficking in Human Beings

The above office has been operating at Police Headquarters since 26/04/2004. In addition to other duties, it is responsible for gathering, processing, analyzing and utilizing intelligence regarding the trafficking of human beings. The Office also coordinates the actions of other police departments that are involved in the investigation of cases of trafficking in human beings. Its members set up and take part in operations that aim at combating human trafficking and having direct and continual contact with the victims, until the final court decision is reached. Furthermore, the Office maintains a database as well as statistical records, takes part in public awareness campaigns on human trafficking and co-operates with foreign services, governmental or non-governmental organizations on matters relating to human trafficking and / or other related issues. Finally, the Office in co-operation with Cyprus Police Academy organizes and runs training programs for police members.
  • In 2009, the police investigated (34) cases in which 113 persons were identified as victims of human trafficking, while in 2010, 35 cases were investigated and 52 persons were identified as victims of human trafficking.
  • In 2011, 26 cases were investigated and 40 people were identified as victims of human trafficking.
