Cyprus Police, within the scope of the legislation on the protection of personal data, has appointed a Data Protection Officer (DPO), whose responsibilities include, among others, the ensuring that the policies of the Police, in relation to the protection of personal data, are in line with the relevant legislation.

The duties of the DPO are defined in Article 39 of the General Data Protection Regulation and Article 37 of the Law 44(I)/2019 for the Protection of Natural Persons with Regard to the Processing of Personal Data by the Competent Authorities for the Purpose of Prevention, Investigation, Detection or Prosecution of Criminal Offenses or the Enforcement of Criminal Penalties.

The DPO’s duties include the following:

a) to inform and advise the controller and the processing staff of their obligations, in accordance with the provisions of the Data Protection Legislation,

b) to monitor the compliance with the provisions of the Personal Data Protection Legislation and the policies of the controller regarding the protection of personal data, including raising awareness and training of staff involved in processing operations,

c) to provide, upon request, advice on the data protection impact assessment and monitor its implementation,

d) to cooperate with the Commissioner for the Protection of Personal Data,

e) to act as a point of contact with the Commissioner for the Protection of Personal Data on processing issues, including prior consultation, conduct consultations, as appropriate, for any other matter.
