NEGLIGENCE ON YOUR PART TO PROTECT YOUR PROPERTY MAY RESULT IN YOU BECOMING THE NEXT VICTIM

POLICE CAUTION AND ADVICE

THEFT FROM VEHICLES

Don’t become the next victim!

Don’t provoke thieves by leaving hand bags, brief cases, mobile phones or any other objects in clear view even if the car is locked. Although an object may be of no value, a thief may cause unnecessary damage to your car in his/her attempt to steal it.

Do not leave your car engine running when you are not in.

Be sure that you have taken your car keys with you when leaving the car.

Lock the doors of your car and close all the windows even if it is parked in front of your home.

Park in well- lit areas. Dark and isolated areas make it easier for thieves to act.

THEFT FROM VEHICLES

Don’t become the next victim!

Don’t provoke………

Never leave the keys in the ignition switch or on the door even if you’ll only be gone for a minute.

Install an alarm system in your car.

Insure your car against theft.

Always Park your car in a garage.

PROTECT YOUR PROPERTY

Every year a large number of our fellow citizens fall victims to theft and burglary. Most of the times this occurs because they fail to take the necessary measures, or they don't know what measures to take in order to protect their property.

REMEMBER THAT BURGLARS PREFER EASY TARGETS. MAKE YOUR HOME A DIFFICULT TARGET SO YOU WON’T BE THE NEXT VICTIM.
The Police recommend the following measures that help protect property. Take the measures which apply to your case as well as those which are considered necessary.

EXTERNAL DOORS AND WINDOWS
The front entrance should be of sturdy construction and should have a peephole through which the person ringing the doorbell can be seen. A chain which does not allow the door to be opened beyond a certain point is also useful.

The rest of the external doors and windows which are located on the ground floor or on a floor with easy access should be secured with locks.

LOCKS

Locks should not be easily picked or otherwise violated. The latch of the lock should be at least 20mm deep into the mortise at the edge of the door when it is in the lock position.

Do not hide the key anywhere near the door. Burglars know where to look to find the key. If your key is stolen, change the lock immediately. Do not leave the key in the keyhole, not even on the inner side of the door if it has a glass window placed about one meter away from the lock.

LIGHTING

Lighting is an important deterrent. Make sure that the perimeter of your home is lit at night. To save energy, lamps should be equipped with motion detector sensors so that they can be activated automatically. If a flood light is to be installed it should be no more than 150W so that there will be no shadows or reflections once it is activated. It should also be directed towards your area so that your neighbours will not be disturbed.

SAFES

For safe-keeping money, jewellery, important documents etc, it is highly recommended that you have at your disposal a safe of a size proportionate to the value of the property to be stored. There are wall mounted safes as well as bolt-secured safes for homes. You should always carry the key of the safe with you. If it has a combination number then do not scribble it anywhere, especially not near the safe.

DO NOT LEAVE LARGE SUMS OF MONEY AT HOME

ALARM SYSTEMS

Think about installing a burglar alarm system. The alarm should be positioned at a height not easily accessible. It should be no less than six meters high if this is possible.

CLOSED CIRCUIT TELEVISION

Closed circuit television (CCTV) systems are recommended for houses which contain extremely valuable property or for houses for which such a system is considered necessary for other reasons. Be sure that the company installing the CCTV system will also provide its maintenance.

NEIGHBOURS

Cooperation with a trustworthy neighbour, who will keep an eye on your home while you are away, and vice versa, is one of the most important measures that can be taken.

The level of security in your neighbourhood will vastly improve if all neighbours cooperate. The Police will be happy and most willing to assist in this area.

MOTOR VEHICLES

You should keep your vehicle locked even if it is parked in your garage and avoid leaving anything inside it that can be easily spotted. Do not neglect to lock your motorcycle and remove the key from its lock.

INFORMATION

The degree of success of the Police in every country depends upon the assistance provided by the public. The Police do not ask much. Simply call 1460, 199, or 112 and report the presence of suspicious persons or vehicles. Be ready to give an accurate description. You will greatly facilitate investigations if you take down the registration numbers of suspicious vehicles.

KEEP IN MIND: Many thefts and burglaries can be prevented.

IF YOU TAKE ALL THE NECESSARY MEASURES TO PROTECT YOUR PROPERTY, THEN TOGETHER WE CAN CREATE A SAFER ENVIRONMENT FOR A BETTER QUALITY OF LIFE
