Demetris Demetriou was born in Nicosia in 1963. He joined the Cyprus Police in July 1984 and after completing the Basic Training Course for Police Constables at the Police Training School and the Mobile Immediate Action Unit, he served at various Police Departments, Units and Services, including the Presidential Guard Unit, the Research and Development Department of Police Headquarters, the Office of the Chief of Police, the Press and Public Relations Office as Officer in charge, Nicosia Police Division as Assistant Divisional Commander and the Traffic Department (Headquarters) as Assistant Director and subsequently as Director. He has also served as Commander of Nicosia Police Division and Director of the European Union and International Police Cooperation Directorate. He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in February 1994, to the rank of Inspector in 1999 and to the rank of Chief Inspector in September 2003. In October 2006 he was promoted to the rank of Superintendent B, while in April 2008 to the rank of Superintendent A. He became a Chief Superintendent in February 2012 and since August 2017 he has been serving as Assistant Chief of Police for Training and Education.
Mr Demetriou has completed a degree in Business Administration at the University of Piraeus and a Bachelor of Law at the University of Nicosia. He also holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration from the Mediterranean Institute of Administration and a Master of Arts with a specialization in strategic Planning from Middlesex University, UK. Additionally, he holds a Certificate in the Investigation and Reconstruction of Road Traffic Accidents from Northwestern University in the USA, for which he was granted a scholarship. He has organised a large number of seminars, and has also taught in most of them. Moreover, he has published in various periodicals a lot of articles on police related subjects, and especially on traffic and road safety issues. He has attended a very large number of seminars in Cyprus and abroad, on a variety of topics including, road safety, crisis situations, hostage negotiation, etc.
Furthermore, besides holding other positions, he is the President of the Regional Nicosia Section and the Deputy President of the Cyprus Section of the International Police Association – I.P.A. In 2012 he was elected internal auditor of the International Police Association, a position which he also held in 2015. He is also President of the Senior Officers’ Association and member of the Committee of the Church of Saint Irene and Agia Sophia of the Cyprus Police. In 2017 he was appointed by the Council of Ministers as member of the National Authority on Gambling and the Supervision of Casinos. He has also been a member of the Council of the European Traffic Police Network (TIPSOL), a member of the International Professional and Cultural Commissions of the International Police Association, a member of the Co-operative Bank of Cyprus Police Officers, Treasurer of the Executive Committee of the Cyprus Police Sports Association, Secretary of the Senior Officers’ Association and member of the Working Group for the preparation of the Cyprus Strategic Plan for Road Safety (2002-2006), prepared by the Cyprus Scientific and Technical Chamber in cooperation with the National Technical University of Athens (Metsovion). He is married with Eleni Demetriou and they have three children.
