Traffic Department

Road Accident Prevention Squads

The main mission of these Squads is the prevention and reduction of road traffic collisions. They are in charge of patrolling the road network on a 24-hour basis with the aim of locating, reporting and apprehending traffic offenders. To this end, both car and motorcycle patrols are in effect. Special emphasis is given to violations that have been shown, through statistical analysis, to cause or contribute to fatal and serious traffic crashes.

A Mechanical Control Office operates as part of the Squads with the purpose of preventing road traffic collisions on highways and the secondary road network. Its members carry out regular checks on all motor vehicles, in order to determine whether they are fit for road use, according to the terms and conditions of the Department of Road Transport.

Avdimou Traffic Squad also operates on a 24-hour basis. Its main mission is to prevent and reduce traffic offences along Limassol – Paphos highway, in accordance with the Traffic Laws and Regulations.

In addition, the members of the Squads offer any assistance required by drivers on the road.

It is important to note that in case of serious crashes or other extreme circumstances - including extreme weather conditions - that result in the blocking of traffic lanes on the highways, the public gets timely information and warning through the media, with the purpose of avoiding traffic congestion and ensuring safe travel. There is an Action Plan in place for facing such situations and diverting the traffic flow, when deemed necessary.

The members of the Squads are also competent and experienced in providing police escort to VIP’s and other dignitaries, ensuring their safe transfer during their stay in the territory of the Republic.
